ECG cable thief handed six-year jail term

A 27-year-old mason, Daniel Nii Quaye alias Kwesi Panyin, was on Monday sentenced to six years imprisonment by a circuit court in Cape Coast for stealing two cable wires valued at GH¢3,932.00 which belonged to the Electricity Company of Ghana.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing and the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Asare Nyako sentenced him on his own plea.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Charles Anku told the court that on Tuesday August 7, Quaye, who lived at Eture near Elmina, went to Abakam, a community near the Cape Coast Elmina highway at about 2300 hours.

He said Quaye climbed an electrical pole and cut two 400 meter long cable wires belonging to the Company but luck, however, eluded him when some residents spotted him in an attempt to carry the cables away.

The convict took to his heels on seeing the people but they arrested and handed him over to the Police at the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
