Ghana deports 26 Bangladeshi nationals linked with human trafficking

Ghana has deported 26 Bangladeshi nationals suspected to be engaged in human trafficking activities between July 21 to August 9, 2012, officials of the Immigration Service said today August 24, 2012.

The nationals were arrested June 28, 2012, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) said in a statement with the help of its Eastern Regional command and the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).

Officials say the foreigners who until their arrest were living in Koforidua and had been in the country between the periods from two weeks and eight months.

The arrests were made after officials detected that the suspects’ visas purportedly issued by the Ghana High Commission in New Delhi, India, were later found to be fake, the Ghana News Agency reports.

According to the GNA report, three of the 26 suspects also had fake GIS permits in their passports, the statement said, adding that “the mastermind is currently on the run but the GIS is being assisted in its investigations by one Osman, a Ghanaian accomplice.”
