CAMFED supports 200 school girls
Two hundred needy school girls in the Garu District, Upper East Region, have received 36 bicycles and computers with accessories from CAMFED Ghana, a non governmental organization working to promote quality livelihood of the people in the area.
The support was to encourage and increase female enrolment, retention and completion rate of girls in schools in the area.
The beneficiaries were selected girls who commute from long distant places to school on foot on daily basis and did not have enough to encourage them to stay in school.
Presenting the items, Mr Charles Atia, Head of Operations of the organization, said CAMFED Ghana was committed to championing girls’ access to education in the three northern regions.
He said the organization was collaborating with key partners such as the Ghana Education Service, district assemblies, district education committees, community leaders and parents through the provision of bursary support to girls and educational resources to schools.
This is aimed at enhancing teaching and learning whilst ensuring high enrolment, retention and progress of girls in basic, secondary and tertiary institutions.
Mr Emmanuel Zemakeh, District Director of Education, commended the organization for its offer and said the daily stress of walking several kilometers to school after doing household chores would reduce the girls’ participation in school activities.
Mr David Adakurugu, District Chief Executive, called on parents of the beneficiaries to ensure the proper maintenance of the bicycles and allow the use of the bicycles by the girls for the intended purpose.
He called on other developmental partners to see education as a bed rock for national development and emulate same for the growth of quality education in the district.
