Education Directors warned against transferring teachers as punishment

The Director of the Curriculum Research and Development Division (CRDD) of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr. Jacob Kor, has warned Metropolitan, Municipal and District directors of Education not to transfer any teacher to the rural areas as punishment.

He stressed that the era when teachers were transferred to rural areas to serve as punishment should be a thing of the past.

Mr. Kor issued the warning at the opening of the 18th Annual Delegates’ Congress of the Teacher Trainee Association of Ghana (TTAG), at the Komenda College of Education on the theme “Redefining Democracy for National Development; The Trainee’s Quota”.

He said any Director who will go against the caution will have him or herself to blame.

Mr. kor said trainee teachers should re-orient themselves to accept postings wherever they will be posted to, adding that, their services were most needed in the rural areas and indicated that teaching was akin to priesthood and that both vocations were a calling from God.

“Teachers like priests must therefore be dedicated, selfless and shine wherever they will find themselves.”

He said the Distance Education and sandwich Programmes at the various Universities were producing more teachers to fill vacancies and this would soon help address the problem of teacher shortage in the country.
