Girls in Northern Ghana attend ICT clinic

About 60 female pupils drawn from various basic and Junior Secondary schools in the Tamale Metropolis have been trained in basic knowledge in Information Communication Technology (ICT) to increase their interest and understanding in the area.

The training was also aimed at reducing gender inequality by increasing school enrolment through effective manipulation and usage of ICT skills by both sexes and improving learning as well as discouraging dropouts.

Mr John Stephen Agbenyo, the Executive Director of Savana Signatures, an NGO, observed that there was a high disparity in the usage of ICT between boys and girls stressing that whiles the boys were more interested in the usage and application of ICT, girls on the other hand turned to shy away.

The ten-day training dubbed ‘1st ICT clinic for girls’ was on the theme: “Promoting female participation in ICT” and organized by Savana Signatures with assistance from Google and Ibis.

It forms part of the NGOs Integration of ICT in Education Project which is a five-year project being implemented in the Tamale Metropolis and Savelugu/Nanton Districts where some schools have been given computers and appliances and teachers trained in ICT as a pilot project.

Mr Agbenyo said the girl’s clinic in ICT was going to be an annual affair whiles the successes of the project would be up-scaled to include more schools to mainstream teaching and learning into ICT.

Hajia Samata Bukari Gifty, Deputy Director of Education at the Tamale Metro, advised the pupils to take the study of ICT very seriously since it encompasses virtually every aspect of their education stressing that the bases of science and mathematics was ICT and knowledge in it would ensure they did well in other subjects.

She said ICT had made teaching and learning simpler and easier noting that students could make good progress by developing interest in their subject areas.

Hajia Gifty encouraged them to learn seriously, be discipline, dedicated and develop themselves well to make good use of the opportunities available to them.
