Lets improve Ghana’s democratic credentials – NCCE
Mr Alex Sackey, Deputy Central Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has called on all political parties to work consciously to sustain and improve the nation’s enviable record of being a peaceful nation.
He said Ghana has become a beacon of hope on the African continent because of her democratic credentials which is often seen in the peaceful transition of power from governing parties to opposition parties, hence the need for all parties to work to sustain that feat.
Mr Sackey who made the call at the Regional Inter Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) meeting in Cape Coast said the Committee had been formed nationwide by the NCCE to among others increase the space for dialogue among political parties.
He said the IPDC was active even at the constituency level and also functional after election and called on all political parties to support the NCCE in entrenching constitutional democracy in Ghana.
Among the parties present were the National Peoples’ Convention (PNC), National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Convention People’s Party (CPP).
The various political parties represented also recognized the need to improve the communication flow between their leadership and the rank and file as well as the contents of the Political Parties code of conduct.
Some of the political parties expressed concern about the timing of the creation of new districts by the Electoral Commission for the December general elections and appealed to the Electoral Commission to reconsider its decision and have it done at another date.
