More funding needed for public tertiary education in Ghana – Prof Laing
Professor Emeritus Ebenezer Laing, former pro-vice Chancellor of University of Ghana, has called for more funding for public tertiary education to churn out quality graduates for national development.
He said education in itself should be made affordable and accessible to all since its part of their civil rights as a citizen of the country.
Prof Laing was speaking at a public lecture on the topic: “Public Tertiary Education in Ghana: The Way Forward” in Accra on Monday.
The lecture was part of the University of Ghana, Legon Hall’s 60th Anniversary celebration on the theme “Legon Hall at Sixty: Contribution to National Development.”
He said government together with management of tertiary education needed to provide infrastructure in the area of Science and technology to enhance academic excellence.
He said government and University management needed to motivate its staff to enable them bring out the best in the graduates they produce each year.
Prof Ernest Aryeetey, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana called on student to invest in themselves for future growth and development.
He said students thought its only government and university authorities who have the responsibility to invest in quality education of its citizens.
He noted that it’s embarrassing to see first class graduates who cant express themselves well, hence the call for student to invest in themselves.
He also called on the students to take internships and mentorship programmes seriously to improve for the job market.
