Suspend elections in proposed new constituencies – TUC
Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) has called for the suspension of elections in the proposed new constituencies which are yet to be created till the elections are over.
This, it said, was because of the legal instrument to manage the elections for the proposed constituencies could not be in force barely two months to the elections more so there would be difficulties for the Electoral Commission and the political parties to provide adequate logistics including personal to ensure the effectiveness of the elections in the proposed constituencies.
This was contained in a statement issued to Ghana News Agency on Thursday and signed by Mr Kofi Asamoah, Secretary General of GTUC in Accra.
It said GTUC recognizes that election related violence usually arises out of the perception of unfairness fed by the view that the electoral system was aimed to benefit one side which is usually the party in power leading to lack of confidence in the electoral institution and its processes.
“It is therefore in the spirit of peaceful elections before, during and after the 2012 elections that GTUC makes these comments about the creation of the 45 new constituencies barely two months to the 2012 elections”, the statement said.
It called on the main political actors and every stakeholder to ensure that the prevailing peace is maintained for development to continue.
