President Mahama calls for cooperation among West African countries

President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday appealed for increased cooperation among countries in West Africa to promote trade, free movement of people and goods in the sub-region.

He said it was in unity that the sub-region could attain its rightful position in the current competitive and erratic global market trend.

President Mahama made the call when he received letters of credence from Mr Ademola Oluseyi, the Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, at the Castle, Osu.

Mr Oluseyi took over from Mr Musiliu Obanikoro, who had finished his duty tour of Ghana and since returned to Nigeria for re-assignment.

President Mahama noted that Nigeria was the largest economy in the sub-region, and  Ghana was ready to support Nigeria to drive the ECOWAS integration agenda that could pave way for the economic and political liberation of the sub-region.

The President said:”The relations between Ghana and Nigeria are historic and based on “common values, culture and people.”

He said the previous Nigerian High Commissioners to Ghana contributed immensely to growth and development of the Ghana-Nigeria cooperation and hoped the relations would grow further in the coming years.

President Mahama hoped Mr Oluseyi would collaborate with the government to take the relations between Ghana and Nigeria to a higher level and move the ECOWAS integration further.

Mr Oluseyi said the historic ties between Ghana and Nigeria had gone a long way and pledged to do his best to move the friendship further by promoting trade between the two countries.

He said Nigerians regarded Ghanaians as their brothers, saying that “Nigeria hold Ghana in high esteem and that would continue in my duty tour of this country”.
