Vice President presents buses to 153 schools
Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur on Friday presented153 buses to some selected Senior High Schools across the country.
He also presented and two Land Cruisers and three saloon cars each to the newly established Universities in the Volta and Brong Ahafo Regions, in Accra.
The presentation formed part of government’s social intervention to ensure a conducive atmosphere was created in the educational institutions, to promote effective learning and teaching.
Mr Amissah-Arthur noted that the schools include 12 special schools scattered across the country and seven newly absorbed Technical and Vocational Institutions.
He said the donation was meant to promote effective monitoring and supervision of second cycle schools as well as provide easy transportation system for students.
He said over the past years, government has ensured that various interventions such as the increase in the capitation grant, the provision of over two million free school uniforms, 53 million exercise books, 60,000 lap top to basic schools and the reduction in the number of schools under trees, were put in place at the basic level.
Mr Amissah-Arthur said at the second cycle level, the construction of additional classrooms and dormitories, provision of tables and chairs were all government interventions geared towards the promotion of an effective educational system.
“In order to promote the teaching of science and mathematics and technology in Senior High Schools government had awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of the existing 110 Science Resource Centres throughout the country. Government is also undertaking the rehabilitation of 10 Technical Institutes throughout the country”
He appealed to the heads of the institutions and drivers to ensure that the culture of maintenance was strictly adhered to, saying it was the only way the life span of the vehicles could be prolonged.
Mr Lee Ocran, Minister of Education noted that the presentation indicated government’s responsibility and commitment towards improving education, and urged the heads to assist government by putting the buses to good use.
