Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences to get permanent headquarters

President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to perform a sod- cutting ceremony on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 commence the construction of a permanent headquarters and auditorium for the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS).

A statement issued and signed by Professor Ralph Mills-Tettey, Honorary Secretary of the Academy, said all procurement and due processes have been completed and a contract had been awarded for the start of the project.

The Academy therefore expressed appreciation to government for the effort in providing the Academy with a permanent headquarters.

The GAAS was established in 1959 as a Sub-Saharan Africa’s premier Academy of learning by the first Prime Minister of the nation, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, through an Act of Parliament.

The Academy had since the period not had permanent offices but has been located in temporary and shared premises with some of the institutes of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.

The statement noted that it was the first time that Government had made it possible for the Academy to justify its premier status as a Sub-Saharan Africa’s premier Academy of learning after the one in Egypt.
