UCC secures GH¢13m funding to setup Fisheries College

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has secured an amount of GH¢13 million for the take-off of the National Fisheries College, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the out-going Vice-Chancellor hinted on Saturday.

She said the College will also get a fully equipped teaching vessel valued at over $20 million from the Korean Government to enhance teaching and learning at the proposed College.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, the first female Vice-Chancellor in the country, who will be retiring on Monday, October 1, was addressing the 44th Congregation of the University on Saturday.

A total of 4,934 graduates graduated on Saturday receiving post graduate and bachelor degrees.

She hinted that the curriculum for the University’s Oil and Gas Institute and the Law programme had been approved by the academic board and will admit students soon.

She said the University was on course with its entrepreneurial ventures to among others produce bottled water in biodegradable containers, make detergents and convert used paper into paper products to generate funds for the school.

The Vice Chancellor mentioned lack of funds as a major challenge to the School and implored its stakeholders to come to their aid to complete some major projects on campus.

She was hopeful that the graduates will impact positively in any sphere of life they find themselves in and to be humble respectful to all people.

Sir Sam Jonah, Chancellor of the UCC advised them not to despise small beginnings but work hard with the skills they had acquired from the University to be successful in life.

He urged them to be determined to achieve their goals and eschew negative attitudes.

Reverend Professor Adow Obeng, the immediate past VC of the UCC and Prof. Kwesi Afransa Haizel, the foundation Dean of the University’s School of Agriculture were awarded with honorary doctorate degrees at the ceremony.
