President Mahama lauded for advocating peaceful elections

Naa Puowele Karbo III, Paramount Chief of the Lawra Traditional Area, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for publicly declaring his commitment to ensuring free, fair, transparent and peaceful elections in December.

The Paramount Chief appealed to Ghanaians to  be tolerant and refrain from the use of intemperate language, as the elections approached, to complement the President’s efforts.

Naa Karbo was speaking at the celebration of this years’ Kob-bine festival of the chiefs and people of the Lawra Traditional Area in the Lawra District of the Upper West Region, at Lawra.

He said the current relative peace and stability in the country should not be taken for granted.

Naa Karbo said he would in conjunction with individuals, organisations, including religious bodies, work hard to ensure free, fair and peaceful polls in December.

He said the festival enable the people to thank their gods for granting them a successful farming season,    renew family ties and take stock of their achievements and failures.

Naa Karboo appealed to the government to expedite action on the construction of the Kamba Irrigation dam to promote agriculture in the district.

He commended government for granting some of their requests made by the people during the celebration of the festival last year, and appealed to the President to ensure that the Lawra Hospital was equipped with an X-Ray to enhance service delivery.

Naa Karbo praised the government for approving the establishment of a Teacher Training College in the district, and requested that the authorities should release funds for the project to start.

Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, Upper West Regional Minister, thanked the chiefs and people for maintaining their rich cultural values.

He said the Ghana Social Opportunities Project, the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority and the Rural Electrification Project were aimed at creating jobs and making life meaningful for the people of the region.

Alhaji Sulemana announced that government would tar the Nadowli-Lawra-Nandom-Hamile Trans-ECOWAS High Way and give the Lawra hospital a facelift.

He commended the Lawra Naa for instituting Pognamine (Queen mothers) in the communities as a step towards increasing the participation of women in governance and in decision making.

Mr. Ambrose Dery, Member of Parliament (MP) for Lawra-Nandom Constituency, appealed to the people to work towards eradicating bad socio-cultural practices that were militating against the empowerment of women.

The MP, who is also the Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, called for peace in Election 2012, and asked the people to reject any politician who preached violence.
