Konongo Odumasi SHS beats Prempeh, Opoku Ware to win robotic challenge competition

Konongo Odumasi Senior High School (KOSS) Science Club emerged champions of the Ashanti/Brong Ahafo Robotic Information Communication Technology (ICT) Challenge Competition held in Kumasi.

For their prize, they received a trophy, medals and a certificate.

The two-day competition, which was part of the World Space Week celebration, saw a lively contest by eight SHS, involving the building and programming of robots to undertake multi-colour grain sorting and mining rescue mission.

Sunyani (SUSEC), Asare Bediako, Notre Dame, Saint Louis, Yaa Asantewaa (YAGSS), Opoku Ware (OWASS) and Prempeh College were the other schools.

Prempeh College took the second position with OWASS coming third.

All participating schools were presented with trophy and certificates.

Dr Ashitey Trebi-Ollennu, Technical Group Leader and Senior Robotic Engineer at the National Aeronautic Space Administration (NASA), California, United States, was the instructor for the building of the robots.

He said the goal was to assist transform the learning experience of young Ghanaians by connecting science theories with their day-to-day activities.

“It is to develop theories to solve problems not to pass tests.”

Dr Trebi-Ollenu said he had no doubt that this would help to demystify science and to make it more attractive to students.

This way, they would help to solve problems in the society within which they lived.

The US Embassy, Ghana Robotics Academy Foundation (GRAF), World Robot Olypiad (WRO), LEGO Education, Carniegie Mellon Engineering, Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT, Advance Information Technology Institute (AITI) jointly sponsored the event.
