New water supply system for Akwatia, other towns

Work will soon start on a new water supply system for Akwatia to supply water to the surrounding towns and communities to the newly created Denkyembour District.

The project is part of a programme to provide three towns with water under a Turkish Loan of 165 million dollars and the Akwatia project is estimated at 67 million dollars.

The two other towns are Akyem Oda and Winneba in the Central Region.

This came to light when a three-member Turkish Team from Arda Muhundilisk Ghana Limited, accompanied by the Ghanaian Head of the company, Mr Joseph Mfransi-Essien, on Wednesday  paid a courtesy call on the Akwatiahene, Osabarima Kofi Boateng III, at his palace at Akwatia to brief him on the project.

The team was led to the palace by Mr Mohammed Ahmed Baba Jamal, Deputy Minister of Tourism.

Mr Baba Jamal said the project had already been approved by Cabinet and Parliament adding that work would commence by the end of the Month.

He said a Dam would be built along the Birim River to feed a treatment plant to be built at the outskirts of Akwatia.

The Deputy Minister said the Turkish Exim Bank and Ghanaian officials had signed agreement to pave way for the release of funds for the project to proceed.

He appealed for the support of the Akwatia Traditional Authority to facilitate the execution of the project in good time.

Mr Baba Jamal said other communities to benefit from the project include Topremang, Bamenase, Mmoframfadiven, Nkwakwaakrom (Number Four) Anweaso and Alfia.

Nana Akwatiahene pledged the support of his people towards the early execution of the project which is expected to be completed within two years.
