740 fishermen, others complete Jubilee partners’ livelihood training
Some 740 fishermen, fishmongers and artisans drawn from 26 fishing communities in the six coastal districts of the Western Region have completed a one-year training programme on the Jubilee Partners Livelihood Enhancement and Enterprise Development (LEED).
The communities included Shama, Nkontompo, Sekondi, New Takoradi, Lower and Upper Dixcove, Busua, Brewire, Apewosika, Essiama, Ankobra, Lower and Upper Axim, Half Assini and Effaso.
The six coastal districts are Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, Nzema East Municipality, Jomoro, Shama and the Ahanta West districts.
Speaking at the passing out ceremony at Axim on Tuesday, Mr Victor Antwi, Project Director of CDC Development Solution, which implemented the programme, said the training consisted of business management, ice box construction, new improved fish smoking oven construction, skills training and internship training for the youth.
He said the scope of the programme included activities to improve the capacity of local individuals to access new opportunities for growth in the key sectors of the economy.
Mr Antwi said under the business management training, the fishermen, fishmongers and artisans were given enterprise development skills to enable them to profitably manage their businesses.
He said the technical training equipped artisans with skills for the construction of improved ice boxes and improved smoking ovens.
Nana Yaa Afriyie Ofori-Koree, Social Investment Manager of Tullow Ghana Limited, said the company was leaving no stone unturned in working with communities to achieve development goals.
She said the company was ensuring that its activities did not impact negatively on any section of the community.
Nana Ofori-Koree said Tullow sought to improve upon the livelihood of communities in its areas of operation and would continue to be open and transparent through communication and engagement with stakeholders.

Other speakers included Nana Kwesi Agyeman IX, Omanhene of Lower Dixcove Traditional Area and Reverend James Ackah-Cobbinah, Nzema East Municipal Chief Executive.
The ceremony was chaired by Awulae Attibrukusu III, President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs and Omanhene of Lower Axim Traditional Area.
