Kwabre East Assembly spends GH¢113,000 to train persons with disabilities

The Kwabre East District Assembly has within the past two years made available a total of GH¢113,000.00 in support of the training of 326 physically challenged persons in various trades and vocations.

Mr Adams Iddisah, District Chief Executive (DCE), said part of the money was used to set up some of them in businesses and the provision of assistive devices.

He was addressing the fifth anniversary celebration of the district branch of the Federation of the Disabled at Mamponteng.

“Promoting peace during the 2012 elections – the role of persons with disabilities” was the theme.

The DCE said the assembly would continue to do everything to assist them to become economically self supporting and lead quality lives.

He appealed to employers to hire those of them with the requisite qualification.

He used the occasion to assure the people that adequate security measures had been put in place to ensure free, fair, transparent and credible elections on December 7. He said they should therefore go out in their numbers to cast their ballot.

Madam Agnes Boakyewaa, the District Social Welfare Officer, called for the rejection of prejudices and misconceptions about the physically challenged.

The stigmatization and discrimination must end.

Mr Francis Amedior, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Society for Physically Disabled (GSPD), said more meaning should be given to the Disability Act.

Ms Angelina Obeng Boateng, the District Chairperson of the Federation, appealed to the political parties not to do anything to ignite violence since they would suffer the most, in the event of conflict.

Nana Kwartemaa Nyiano, the Queen of Wadie-Adwumakaase, asked that they should not allow their situation to become a hindrance but to rather work hard to improve on their livelihood.
