Wa Polytechnic to promote science and technology

The Wa Polytechnic has more work to do to tilt its admissions scale in favour of Science and Technology as a key demand of the National Council for Tertiary Education.

However the school’s Business programmes remained the attraction of new students this year.

Out of the 481 students who matriculated at the Polytechnic on Saturday, 42 students representing 12.1 per cent are in the School of Engineering, 125 students representing 36.1 per cent were admitted into Applied Science and Technology programmes while a whopping 179 students which represents 51.8 per cent are in the Business School.

Professor Godwin S.K. Aflakpui made these statistics available to the media at the 10th matriculation of 481 new students into the Polytechnic to undertake Higher National Diploma and non -tertiary programmes at the Polytechnic on Saturday.

The Polytechnic which was established in 1999 offers Higher National Diploma courses in Accountancy, Secretaryship, Agricultural, Civil, Mechanical Engineering, Building Technology, Estate Management, Information and Communication Technology.

Professor Aflakpui announced that the Polytechnic had received accreditation to offer Dispensing Technology programme and is waiting for the National Board for Professional Technician Examinations to carry out expert review of the curriculum before the programme could begin.

The Polytechnic is also anticipating securing accreditation to begin a programme in Industrial Art in the coming months.

He expressed the hope that pioneers of the new programmes would work hard to impress the regulatory bodies of tertiary education that the Polytechnic deserve the accreditation to mount the new programmes.

Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, Upper West Regional Minister in a speech read on his behalf said the Government in conjunction with the authorities  of the  Polytechnic had begun the construction of a faculty building at a cost of GH₵45 million.

He said the Regional Coordinating council through Ghana Education Trust Fund is providing an initial amount of GH₵1.5 million to cater for site set up, clearing and earth works while serious consideration is being given to the request of the Polytechnic to extend street lights to the institution to facilitate evening studies and security on campus.

He advised the students not to engage in any acts of violence or allow themselves to be used by politicians for their selfish ends.

Alhaji Sulemana asked them to be ambassadors of incident free elections.
