Labourer jailed five years for stealing

Takoradi Circuit Court “B” on Monday sentenced a 27-year old labourer, Ekow Boateng, to five years imprisonment in hard labour for stealing, causing unlawful damage and unlawful entry.

The accused pleaded guilty.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Seth Ahelegbe said at about 10.00 p.m. on November 28 this year, Godwin Adams, a dock labourer and his wife, Elizabeth Awuni, a seamstress, retired to bed after locking the door of their room at Effiakuma Number one.

He said at about 0400 hours the following day, Adams woke up and detected that the door to the room was opened and a laptop and two mobile phones he placed on a table the previous night had disappeared.

Inspector Ahelegbe said the couple made a report to the police on their way to seek medical treatment for their child.

He said the couple saw the accused in a cab holding the laptop under his armpit.

He said the accused was chased and arrested and the laptop was identified by the couple as theirs.

Inspector Ahelegbe said during a search on the accused, one G-tide cell phone belonging to the couple was found.

He said one Samsung D900 cell phone valued at 120 Ghana cedis had not been retrieved from the accused.

Inspector Ahelegbe said the accused was handed over to the police and admitted the offence in his caution statement.

The accused was charged after investigations were carried out.
