US-based charity group introduces new water filter system in Ghana

Safe Water Trust, a US-based Charity Organisation, on Tuesday introduced a membrane water filter system, Aquafilter, for water treatment in the rural communities in the country.

Mr John Griffith, manufacturer of the product, explained at a press conference in Accra that the filter was developed using hollow ultra-filtration membrane technology.

The idea behind the innovation was to design a system appropriate for providing water in developing countries, he said.

“Two units have been developed, the Aquafilter Community for schools, clinics or villages, and Aqua filter Family for families and compounds,” he said.

He said the product was specifically developed for communities in developing countries because such areas were prone to water borne diseases like Bilharzia and Diarrhea, adding that it was ideal for communities along river banks, streams and those using boreholes.

Mr Griffith said the product had been introduced and widely accepted in countries like Gambia, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda and Haiti.

He said the filter was capable of removing bacteria, viruses and turbidity, making the water clearer and safer for drinking.

“No electricity is needed; the units are easily portable and can be stored safely”

Mr Isaac Ampomah, President of Concerned Health Organisation, a civil society group in health education, said the filter had been used on pilot basis in rural communities in Ghana which were mostly affected by water borne diseases.
