Police urged to act professionally to win public confidence

Monsignor Raphael Owusu-Peprah, Rector of the Saint Peter’s Minor Basilica in Kumasi, has appealed to the police and other security agencies to maintain high standards of professionalism as the nation goes to the polls.

They should be mindful of their duty to the state and deal firmly with all trouble makers without distinction, he said.

This comes amidst rumours and allegations about evil plots by some unscrupulous people to cause confusion on voting day in the Ashanti Region.

Monsignor Owusu-Peprah, making the appeal through the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the world was watching the December 7 polls with keen interest and that the nation could not afford to falter.

Peace is of inestimable value and must never be taken for granted, he said, adding that those entrusted with the job of maintaining law and order therefore needed to put the nation ahead of any other consideration.

The Monsignor also reminded voters to conduct themselves well to make the elections pass off peacefully and urged election officials to be impartial and ensure that the choice of the people was not subverted.

It is important to constantly “remind ourselves” of the dreadful consequences of flawed elections on the stability of countries elsewhere in Africa to avoid mistakes and pitfalls, he concluded.
