Minister tells media not to make Korle Bu hospital part of politics
Mr Rojo Mettle -Nunoo, Deputy Minister of Health, has advised the media against playing politics with the activities of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
He said the media had most of the times focused on negative publications about the hospital while reporting little on the tremendous achievements of the Hospital over the years.
“The media should not make the hospital part of the politics of the country”
Mr Mettle- Nunoo said this at the launch of the 90th Anniversary celebrations of the Hospital in Accra on Tuesday.
The Anniversary, which is a year long programme, is dubbed “Ninety Years of Excellence in Health Care: Our Future Aspirations and Challenges”
According to the Minister, the theme was an indication of the sacrifices that had been made to ensure the Hospital is placed at the forefront of the health care within the country and West Africa
“The Ministry has been very supportive of this Hospital in its growth from a general hospital to become a tertiary institution of health care with Centres of Excellence to provide specialist care in areas that were hitherto non-existent in the sub-region.”
Mr Mettle-Nunoo said the government had tried to keep faith with the people by ensuring that services are available and affordable.
“The provision of free health care to children in addition to free maternal health care all point to an attempt to achice the MDG s 4 and 5.”
He appealed to the Hospital Board and management to remember the pioneers of the Institution and other staff who had played sacrificial roles at ensuring that it is at the peak of excellence in health care.
Professor Otu Nartey, Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital, said the Hospital’s services to the people in the course of 90 years had enabled the Hospital to build its core competencies and strengths.
He said as part of the medical retooling of hospitals, there were ongoing projects on rehabilitation of infrastructure and replacement of equipment.
“Prof Nartey sixteen theatres are being rehabilitated, two slides CT scan is being replaced by a 640 slides CT scan and the catering and laundry units are being rehabilitated and re-equipped.
Thirteen patient elevators had been replaced with the support and finding from the National Health Insurance Authority.
Professor Otu appealed to the government to continue to support the hospital to start and complete other new projects such as the children’s emergency centre, the 400-bed capacity hospital complex and the proposed Urology and Tissue Transplantation Centre.
