NPP to meet over electoral concerns

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will meet on Tuesday to discuss the way forward following the declaration of the results of the presidential election by Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan. Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC).

The declaration of the results on Sunday night went ahead after the National Peace Council (NPC) met the EC, NPP and National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the concerns of the NPP.

The NPC said they agreed at the meeting that the EC could go ahead with the declaration of the results that it had while the NPP could go to court to seek redress.

The NPP in a statement signed by Mr Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, General Secretary, noted that the Chairman of the EC, Dr Afari-Gyan, on Sunday evening made a declaration on the December 7 presidential election, that said President John Mahama had won the vote with 50.70% of the valid vote.

“As the New Patriotic Party leadership made it clear to him earlier (this) evening, in a meeting requested by us and called by the National Peace Council, with the other political parties in attendance, we have serious reservations about the validity of what the Chairman of the Electoral Commission has done in declaring results that, by the evidence, do not reflect the mandate of the required majority of the Ghanaian electorate,” the statement said.

It added that the NPP National Chairman, Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, had accordingly convened an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee of the NPP on Tuesday December 11 to lay out the steps that the party will take in light of these events.

The party called upon all NPP members and supporters to remain calm.
