Ghana Health Service gets new Director-General
Dr Ebenezer Appiah-Denkyira has been appointed the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), with effect from September 26, 2012.
Until his appointment, he was the Director of Human Resource for Health Development at the Ministry of Health (MoH).
Dr Appiah-Denkyira obtained his GCE ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level certificates from the Prempeh College in Kumasi and qualified as a medical officer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
He also holds a Masters degree in Public Health from the Leeds University, UK and an Executive Masters in Leadership and Governance from the Ghana Institute of Management (GIMPA).
He is also a Foundation Fellow of Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and was once the Secretary to the Public Health Faculty.
A statement issued in Accra said Dr Appiah-Denkyira had been a Regional Director of Health Services for 17years in three regions, Upper West, Ashanti and Eastern, and had wide experience in planning, monitoring and evaluation in the health service.
It said he had over the years been involved in consultancies in health and health –related sectors such as developing human resource policy, transport policy, health insurance, strategic plan, national ambulance and poverty reduction plans.
While working as the Regional Director of Health Service for the Upper West Region, he was concurrently appointed the Project Manager of an $11.0million DANIDA sponsored Primary Health Care Project in the Upper West Region, which he also helped in developing.
Dr Appiah-Denkyira had also held consultancies for the World Bank in reviewing the Ghana Dee Exemption Policy, for DANIDA in appraising the health system and for MoH in reviewing the health financing and forecasting financial strategies in Ghana.
He had also undertaken an international consultancy as the team leader for the Jigawa State in Nigeria in Repositioning the State Ministry of Health, in 2007 sponsored by PATHS/DFID.
He was a field supervisor for the School of Public Health, University of Ghana for well over 10years. As Director of Human Resource for the Ministry of Health, through innovative ways, he engaged the academia in developing new programmes for a lot of health professionals, reduced the North-South distribution of doctors, supported establishment of Allied Health Regulatory Task Force, initiated Internet Human Resource Information System, the scaling up of the production of middle level health personnel and other neglected programmes in Ghana.
On a number of occasions, he has represented the country at international conferences. He has served on many boards including academic institutions such as the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and University of Cape Coast.
On the global scene, Dr Appiah-Denkyira was currently a board member of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Staff Pension Scheme and also served on the Advisory Committee of Global Alliance on Migration. He also has a number of publications to his credit.
He is married to Mrs Aba Appiah-Denkyira and they have three children.
