Ghana coach wants team improvement despite victory over Egypt
Ghana’s trainer, Kwesi Appiah is seeking improvement from his charges despite their impressive 3-0 thumbing of Egypt, in a billed up to the Africa Nations Cup friendly played in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
Appiah, after watching his side record Ghana’s biggest win over the North African refused to be carried away by the result which he insists will be insignificant unless it could be translated into the real tournament beginning Saturday, January 19, in South Africa.
“This is our first trial game and we are preparing a team for the tournament in South Africa. I normally do not bother that much about the scores, whether they scored ten goals or we did. My focus is rather on the performance; tactically, how we defend, attack and how we implement our set-pieces.”
Appiah, who leads Ghana to the tourney for the first time as the head coach is rather preoccupied with building a strong team capable of winning Ghana the fifth elusive holy grill that spans over three decades.
“This is our first trial game and it is important that you identify things that were not done well. I did not see that much in terms of the speed because most of the time we were able to create chances through our wings.
“The most important thing is how to defend tactically whenever we went on counter attacks plus how to finish our attacks. I was looking at our set pieces and how we implement them as well.”
Emmanuel Agyemang Badu’s first half header plus a double from Richmond Boakye-Yiadom and Captain Asamoah Gyan after the interval wrapped up a 3-0 win for the Black Stars in their first friendly of two.
Ghana will next play against Tunisia in their second warm-up game on Sunday.
The Stars are housed in Group B alongside Mali, DR Congo and Niger.
