Hajia Fati Suleiman, Deputy National Chairperson for The Federation of Muslim Women Association in Ghana (FOMWAG), has commended the President for nominating Nana Oye Lithur to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday, she said the President’s decision is the right one for the nation.

She said Nana Oye Lithur is a very capable person who is well informed on a broad range of issues including issues on gender and human rights and with this nomination she would excel in her role.

Hajia Suleiman said her nomination to the new Ministry is also a huge challenge as it is faced with logistical constraints and funding and that attention should be paid to the mobilisation of funds at the grassroot level and to ensure that proper attention is paid to all activities related to the work of the Ministry.

She said more resources are needed to educate women in various languages especially in the rural areas, to come on board and join the national fight against the violence often meted to them.

Hajia Suleiman said it was also expected that the new Ministry would stay in touch with people at the grassroot level, liaise with other women organisations on the ground and create meaningful policies to help improve the state of women in the country.

She appealed to the nominee to also promote and work with parliament to adopt bills aimed at preventing child abuse and gender based violence and this should be in addition to increasing the momentum of educating women in the country.
