Police, armed robbers in fierce gun battle in Agona Swedru
A gang of armed robbers on Friday engaged the Agona Swedru police patrol team in a fierce gun battle before abandoning their vehicle and fleeing with their booty.
In the process, Corporal Edward Nana Kumi received minor injuries when he fell from the moving patrol vehicle and was treated and discharged at Agona Swedru Government Hospital.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr Kennedy Adusei, Agona Swedru Divisional Crime Officer, made this known to the press at Swedru on Saturday.
He said at about 2250 hours, the police patrol team received distress call from the Guardian Hotel that armed robbers had attacked the facility.
DSP Adusei said the robbers had attacked Mr Edward Aduamoah, Executive Director of United Way Ghana, at gun-point and robbed him of GH¢3,000 and two mobile phones and were fleeing with his private car they snatched from him when they were apprehended.
He said the robbers had earlier tied the security officer on duty.
According to DSP Aduesei, the patrol team, led by Inspector Emmanuel Jackson Ntiri, rushed to the crime scene and started chasing the robbers who were in the Toyota Prado belonging to Mr Aduamoah.
He said on reaching Gomoa Akotsi Junction near Kasoa, the patrol team vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a gutter and the robbers, who had earlier engaged the police in gun shot exchanges, fled into the bush with the money and the mobile phones.
He said during a search on the vehicle one locally manufactured pistol was found in it.
DSP Adusei appealed to the people to report any one found with gun-shot wounds to the police since there was indication that some of the robbers might have been wounded.
