Pokukrom Health Centre to shut down over lack of water

Water tapThe Pokukrom Health Centre in the Ahafo-Ano South District is facing imminent closure over the lack of water supply.

A borehole sunk to serve the needs of facility broke down about two years ago and this Mr Castro Adu Obeng, the Physician Assistant, says is making it difficult for them to operate.

Speaking at an end of year performance review meeting of the District Health Management Team (DHMT) at Mankranso, he warned that if the situation was not tackled they would have no option but to cease operating.

He mentioned the laboratory and dispensary as the worst hit by the water crisis.

People in about 22 predominantly cocoa farming communities including Ahwerewam, Abesewa, Nsuat, Amangoase, Domeabra, Mentuku, Mmofra and Debiti depend on the Centre for health care.

Mr Obeng said the District Assembly had been told of the problem but was yet to give any indication of its readiness to get it resolved.

The Ashanti Regional Tuberculosis Officer, Mr Kofi Sroda, called for urgent measures to fix the problem.

In the interim, he asked that the Centre’s laboratory should be shut because it was out of place to operate a laboratory without running water.

He gave the DHMT high marks for the good job it was doing to promote quality health care delivery and said this should be sustained.

Mr Sroda reminded them to be on the lookout for possible cases of cerebro spinal meningitis, because of its proximity to the disease’s endemic area.

Mr Reuben Bedzrah, the District Director of Health Service, appealed to the assembly to help extend electricity to health facilities in the area that are without power supply.
