WTO top job: Mahama seeks continues AU support for Ghana’s Kyerematen
Despite the African Union’s full backing, Ghana’s President John Mahama has asked for continues support from African leaders for former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen’s bid to become the next Director General of Geneva-based World Trade Organisation (WTO).
During his speech to Heads of State at the ongoing 20th Ordinary Session AU Summit in Addis Ababa, President Mahama took the opportunity to thank them for their support for the candidature of Mr Kyerematen.
“I look forward to your continued support as he begins to go through the processes of selection associated with this strategic position,” President Mahama told the gathering of African Heads of State.
He added, “Fifty years after the formation of the OAU/AU, Africa is more than ready to lead this crucial world body through the much needed process of reform that will enhance Africa’s prospects as an equal partner in the world trade system.”
President Mahama made a similar campaign statement for Mr Kyerematen at the recently–held ACP Summit in Equatorial Guinea.
Mr Kyerematen will compete with other eight candidates for the WTO top job to succeed Mr Pascal Lamy.
