Rev. Kwapong inducted chair of Akuapem Presbytery
The Reverend George Opare Kwapong, 49, was inducted into office as the new chairperson for the Akuapem Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, at Akropong on Sunday.
Rev Kwapong, former District Minister of Frafraha, in Accra, and former Minister in Charge of the Victory Congregation, succeeds Rev Dr Samuel Ayetey-Nyampong, who was elected Clerk of the General Assembly of the Church at Abetifi in August last year.
Preaching, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Right Rev Professor Emmanuel Martey, called on Ghanaians to forge unity of purpose to facilitate development.
He condemned ethnocentrism, division, nepotism, rancour, bribery and corruption, rumour mongering and back-biting in the society.
The Moderator asked people in leadership positions to be humble and eschew arrogance, greed and power-drunkenness in order not to inflame passion.
The Right Rev Martey urged the new chairperson to ensure that during his tenure of office more people would come to know Christ than ever before and cautioned him against anything that could bring the name of Jesus Christ and Christianity in general into disrepute.
The Right Rev Martey advised the new Presbytery Chairperson to sow seeds of evangelism and love among the congregation.
Reverend Kwapong spoke about the need for children of school going age to be educated to ensure the growth of the country.
He said the Presbytery had contributed a lot to educate people and would continue to do so to facilitate the development of the country.
Rev Kwapong commended former chairpersons of the Presbytery for their dedication and exemplary leadership, which had made the Presbytery one of the best in the church.
He promised to implement the mission, vision, strategy and development plans of the Presbytery, and to promote evangelism to win more souls for Christ.
Rev Kwapong therefore said the Presbytery would look for more funds to enable it appoint a full time Director of Evangelism in order to achieve the vision of converting more people to Christ.
He paid tribute to the founding fathers of the Church who sacrificed their lives to sow the seed of Christianity to the people of Akuapem which later spread to all parts of the country.
Rev Kwapong is a product of University of Ghana, Trinity Theological College, Accra, and Princeton Theological Seminary in the United States of America.
