Western Region rep for Council of State re-elected
Mr. George Kofi Dadzie, 59, was on Wednesday re-elected as the Western Region representative to the Council of State for the next four years.
He polled 43 votes to defeat two other contestants, Mr. Isaiah Kweku Quansah,50, a court bailiff, who polled one vote, whilst Madam Paulina Asmah, a 57-year old trader, got zero.
The Western Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr. Stephen Opoku-Mensah, supervised the elections at Sekondi.
The electoral college comprised of two representatives from the 22 metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies in the Region, adding up to 44 voters.
Mr. Dadzie, who served as the Region’s representative to the Council of State for the past four years, expressed gratitude to the delegates for the confidence reposed in him.
He pledged to champion development of the region in collaboration with stakeholders.
Mr. Dadzie said he would work with the metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives, Members of Parliament, Presiding Members as well as the traditional authorities to accelerate the development of the region.
He noted that the region contributes immensely towards the Gross Domestic Product of the country, yet it had not received its fair share of the national cake, and promised to collaborate with stakeholders to move the area forward.
Mr. Dadzie said though the National Democratic Congress government under the late President John Atta-Mills embarked on massive infrastructure development in the region, the people were expectant of more infrastructure development.
He appealed to the current government to pay attention to the region, especially with regards to poor road network, inaccessibility potable water and unemployment.
Mr. Dadzie asked the government to resuscitate railway lines and build more petroleum plant in the region to create employment for the teeming unemployed youth.
The Chapter 9 of the 1992 Constitution, Article 89 (2)(c) states that one representative from each region would be elected to the Council of State to offer counsel to the President.
The Council of State is made up of 25 members, comprising a former Chief Justice, Inspector General of Police, Chief of Defence Staff, President of the National House of Chiefs, 10 representatives elected from the 10 regions and 11 other members appointed by the President.
