Mobile operators in Ghana add 4.3 million new SIM subscribers to reach record 25.6 million in 2012
Ghana added a total of 4,352,721 new mobile SIM subscribers during the year 2012, latest official figures have shown.
The year 2012 started with 21,265,706 SIM subscribers and rose to a record 25,618,427 end of December 2012, adding 4,352,721 throughout the year, according to the National Communications Authority (NCA) mobile voice market share (December, 2012).
Of the total number, MTN, the market leader with 46% share, had a subscriber base of 11,734,500 followed by Vodafone with 5,259,487 base which represented 21 % of total market share.
Tigo and Airtel recorded an increase of base to 3,698,409 and 3,192,154 respectively to close the year 2012. Tigo’s market share stood at 14% while Airtel’s was 12%.
Glo decreased its subscriber base. Its current subscriber base of 1,568,014 represents 6% of the total market share, the NCA figures indicated.
Expresso’s subscriber base also slumped to 165,863, representing 1 % of the total market share.
The country’s total fixed lines stood at 284,981 as at end of December 2012 from 276,808 in January 2012.
