Association unveils plan to promote baseball in Ashanti Region
Mr. Albert Frimpong, President of the Ghana Baseball and Softball Association (GHABSA), said the body has unveiled plans to promote baseball in the Ashanti Region.
He said it formed part of a five-year agenda to unearth talents and identify potential baseball and basketball players, coaches and other technical personnel.
Mr Frimpong said a standard baseball field would be constructed, baseball and softball clubs established in basic schools, and the holding of training of trainees workshops for physical education instructors.
He said GHABSA would team up with corporate bodies and non-governmental organisations to support clubs with the necessary equipment and training kits.
Mr Frimpong told a stakeholders’ meeting at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi that the association was committed to creating public awareness about baseball and softball through regular engagement.
Shinya Tomonari, a Japanese expert in baseball and softball, called for sustained efforts to develop the sport to enable Ghana win medals in international competitions.
He said through his instrumentality, Greater Accra Region would this year organize its maiden inter-schools competition to give the youth the chance to participate in the sport.
Mr. Saka Acquaye, Ashanti Regional Director of Sports, said the body would collaborate with the GHABSA to grow the sport in the region.
