President John Dramani Mahama on Monday cut the sod for the commencement of work on a $10 billion rLG Communications building complex with the assurance that government would partner the private sector to create jobs.
He said: “Government has made investments over the years and it is now time for the private sector to spearhead job creation in Ghana and the entire African continent.”
The project, which is dubbed: “City of Hope” gives the full meaning of hope as homes, offices, and conducive environment would be created for people to work. It is expected to be completed within three years.
The cluster is composed of six towers of different dimensions, one tower 270m height (75 storeys, the highest in Africa), two towers of 216m (60 storeys), and three towers of 152m height (42 storeys).
The towers would also have a university, schools, shopping centres, offices, residential areas, game centres with bridges connecting all the towers in the city.
President Mahama said government would continue to offer all the necessary support to the private sector including rlg and advised the private sector to take advantage of the Private-Public Partnership initiated by government to come out with the necessary steps to advance the economy for more jobs to be created.
He said wealth and economic growth was no longer dependent on natural resources of a country but knowledge and technological advancement adding that Ghana would speed up information technology to give increased developmental options.
Mr Roland Agambire, Chairman of the AGAMS Group and Chief Executive Officer of rlg Communications Limited, said his dream of building the city was inspired by former President Kwame Nkrumah and Tetteh Quarshie, who exhibited a lot of patriotism by setting the pace for African leaders.
“While bringing modernity and excellence into the design of the City of Hope, all efforts have been made in incorporating the Ghanaian ingenuity and culture in the architecture as its inspiration.” He said.
He said his outfit had the intention of creating an indigenous telecommunication operator in the voice and data industry and appealed to government to lend the necessary support that would enable them to establish that for the benefit of Ghanaians and beyond.
Mr Agambire said his outfit had also signed agreements with the Microsoft Corporation and the GUMA Group of Companies in South Africa and called on partners to provide the necessary support that would enhance the development of the company.
“Further to our exploits to create synergies among our peers on the continent, Rlg and the GUMA Group through one of its subsidiaries, GUMA Technologies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to partner each other to develop and impact on Africa and beyond using cutting edge technological advancements available at our disposal.”
Mr Ali Famamwy, Senior Vice President of Microsoft Corporation, said information technology had improved on investments and innovations and the desire of rlg to expand its activities would in the long run create more jobs with massive innovations.
He said there was the need to equip the youth with skills and knowledge in information technology as the future was in their hands to develop the country in the coming years.
“We are also developing ICT to cover the playing of football which have for sometime attracted some criticisms in terms of accuracy in goals scoring,” he said.
