Medical laboratory students campaign for reduction in preventable diseases
The Federation of Ghana Medical Laboratory Students’ Association (FG-MELTSA) has held its maiden national delegates’ congress in Kumasi with a call on members to campaign vigorously to reduce preventable diseases in the country.
Mr Maxwell Akonde, the President of the Association, said diseases such as malaria, cholera, sexually-transmitted and other communicable diseases, as well as maternal and infant mortality could be tackled effectively with regular education.
He said it was necessary to let the public know the causes and management of such diseases to enhance the health of the people.
The programme was under the theme “Quality Healthcare, Our Priority”.
The congress amongst others was aimed at deepening relationships amongst the members and also strategize for future activities to sustain the growth of the Federation.
Mr Akonde welcomed the coming together of the students saying the alliance was long overdue in view of the numerous challenges that inhibited acceptable laboratory practices in the country.
He decried the continuous use of obsolete equipment and prolifieration of quack laboratory technicians and scientists which were dangerous to the health of the people.
Mr Ekow Biney of the Ghana Health Services urged the students to research and also take advantage of the prevailing technological advancement to keep abreast with the dynamism and opportunities in the profession.
