Regional Minister urges farmers to accept modern practices
Mr. Bede Ziedeng, the Upper West Regional Minister, has appealed to traditional rulers to help educate farmers to accept modern agricultural practices being offered them by the government through the Savannah Agricultural Development Authority (SADA).
He said farmers had depended on traditional farming practices for a very long time and poverty and hunger continued to remain the major challenge confronting the people, hence, the need to try these modern agricultural practices.
Mr. Ziedeng made the appeal when he paid courtesy calls on the Paramount Chiefs of Zini, Gwollu, Tumu and Wellembelle Traditional Areas.
The four Paramount Chiefs are Kuoro Barecheh Nlowie Baninye, Acting President of the Zini/Buwa Traditional Council, Kuoro Kuri Limann Buktie, Paramount Chief of Gwollu Traditional Area, Kuoro Richard Babini Kanton VI, Paramount Chief of Tumu Traditional Area and Kuoro Mumini Dimmie, Paramount Chief of Wellembelle Traditional Area.
Mr. Ziedeng said the President’s vision was to develop the country through transformation of the economy to create more jobs and modernize agriculture to increase food productivity for sustainable food security in the country.
In this regard, SADA would ensure mechanization of agriculture, provide improved seeds, livestock and small ruminants as well as address the problem of water bodies to ensure all year round farming across all operational areas.
The Regional Minister said the President also had the vision of making education especially senior high school and university education more accessible to the people to ensure a high literate population that could compete globally.
Mr. Ziedeng appealed to the paramount chiefs to help ensure peace and security in their areas, adding that without peace and security there would not be any meaningful development.
Kuoro Barecheh Nlowie Baninye appealed to the Minister to take tactical steps towards resolving what he referred to as internal conflict between Sissala and Dagaaba people in Nemoro and Fielmuo in the Sissala West District.
He appealed to the government to establish a senior high school in Zini to stop children travelling long to school.
Kuoro Kuri Limann Buktie, thanked the government for establishing the Dr. Hilla Limann SHS and appealed for water and electricity to be extended to the schooll.
Kuoro Richard Babini Kanton and Kuoro Mumini Dimmie both spoke about the bad nature of roads in the region and appealed to government to give priority to the construction of roads in the region.
