I’m focusing on Sudan game – Kwesi Appiah
Ghana Coach, Kwasi Appiah says he is preoccupied with preparations for the Black Stars World Cup qualifier against Sudan in the wake of media reports concerning Abedi Pele’s thought of him.
The three-time African Footballer of the Year is quoted as expressing disappointment in Appiah following the axing of his two sons, Andre and Jordan, from the Black Stars squad that finished fourth at the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa last month but the Coach says his focus was rather firmly fixed on next Sunday’s crucial duel with Sudan.
He told GNA Sports: “my initial reaction was that of a surprise because this was not something I expected. But frankly, I take it as one of those. If it is part of the cross I must carry as a coach, then that is fine.
“I got surprised when I heard the tape because I have no problem whatsoever with Abedi. I visit him sometimes, we talk on the telephone as well. Like I said, there is no problem between us.”
The soft spoken Appiah said “it is unfortunate that these things are happening at a crucial time like this. But then, I want to assure all that my only focus is on the game and how we can be successful after 90 minutes.
“I know the importance of this game with Sudan and that is taking my full concentration. I think it is important that we all draw together as a nation and support the team to win convincingly to keep going.”
Appiah, in his eleventh month as head coach has a target to qualify Ghana to a third successive World Cup slated for Brazil next year with a mandate to send the Black Stars to the semi finals.
Ghana are currently second behind Zambia who are three points richer in Group D. The Stars must beat Sudan to breathe a measure of hope into their campaign.
