Saltpond Chief condemns NPP over election results
Nana Ekow Arhin I, Chief of Kokodo in the Saltpond Traditional Area, has appealed to the leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to accept the 2012 presidential election results.
He said by so doing they would promote national peace and development.
Nana Arhin made the call when speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Agona-Swedru at the weekend.
The Chief said by the acceptance of the presidential results, the NPP would not only help in advancing the course of nation building processes, but also give full meaning to the famous “Kumasi Declaration Accord” which was signed by all political party leaders in the last December general elections.
Nana Arhin reminded the NPP leaders that under the Kumasi Declaration, which they wholeheartedly endorsed, agreed that the party would accept the outcome of the elections whether it go in their favour or not.
He maintained that even though the country’s constitution permit the NPP to address such issue through the appropriate channel like the Supreme Court, by the party’s action, it had in a way exhibited some amount of disrespect for Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene and the Peace Council who collaborated to initiate the declaration.
Nana Arhin said the fact that the party had taken the case to court did not imply all was lost, adding that; “in the best interest of our dear nation’s peace, stability, and progress, I think leaders of the party could initiate a second and more critical look at the issue at stake and rescind their decision.”
He advised followers of the two leading political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP to strive to exercise the highest level of self-control in all their partisan dealings.
Nana Arhin criticised the Minority group in Parliament for boycotting parliamentary proceedings when President John Dramani Mahama delivered the State of the Nation Address.
He reminded the NPP members in Parliament that they were there to provide duties that would help improve the lot of the electorates and the nation at large and not for their personal or partisan gains.
Nana Arhin said it was about time that parliamentarians both majority and minority groups initiated joint move that would be geared towards total national peace and socio-economic advancement.
He condemned the Minority’s move to deliver another State of the Nation’s Address after the President had presented his to Parliament.
Nana Arhin said such actions could gradually lead to the creation of conflicts and chaos and must be stopped.
