Let’s attach more importance to technical, vocational training – Principal of KTI

Dr Joseph Abbaiku Apprey, Principal of the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI), has underlined the need to place more value on technical and vocational education.

He said the widely held perception among Ghanaians that technical and vocational schools are for the academically weak students needs to change.

Until this was done it would be difficult for the nation to make any significant headway in its development effort, he added.

Dr Apprey was speaking at a career conference organized by the Radio/Television (RTV) and Electronic Department of the Institute in Kumasi.

The theme was “Finding your place in today’s electronic market,” and it brought together both students and parents.

The Principal said turning out well skilled technical students would help to address industrial problems faced by the nation.

Mr Seth Asamoah, Coordinator for the Council of Technical and Vocational Education Training (COTVET), said deliberate efforts should be made to develop the manpower base through skills training.

This, he noted, was the way to bring down the growing unemployment among the youth.

He invited the people to embrace vocational and technical training to fight poverty and grow the economy.

Promoting technical education must be made a major agenda of the political parties, he said.

Mrs Patricia Ampofowaa Boso, last year’s National Best Teacher and the Head of the Department, said the programme was to aid the students to have some insight into the job market.
