Social workers urged to do more to protect Ghanaian children
This year’s World Social Work Day has been marked with a call on sociologists and social workers to do more to give protection to children and the vulnerable.
Mr Jacob Achilo, Ashanti Regional Director of the Department of Social Welfare, said they needed to intensify their efforts at tackling irresponsible parenthood, child labour and abuse.
This was at a seminar held at the Department of Sociology and Social Work at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
It was organized by the Sociology and Social Work Student’s Association (SSOWSA) of the University.
Mr Achilo encouraged sociologists to research into problems of indiscipline, unemployment, rising crime and other societal challenges and to assist find solutions to them.
Dr Esmeranda Manful, a Lecturer at the Department of Sociology and Social Work, urged students to positively influence society by actively participating in the discussion of issues affecting it.
She said they should work hard to change the mind-set of the people, their attitudes and social behaviour.
She complained about the widening gap between the poor and the rich and said this demanded a national debate to find an answer.
Mr Adusei Amponsah, President of SSOWSA, underlined the need to adequately resource the Social Welfare Department to enable it to perform.
