Tema Metro holds first ordinary meeting

Housing_PopulationMr Emmanuel Adzei Anang, a Member of the Council of State, has reminded assembly members that as local politicians they could only expose those who flout the laws only if they go about their duties diligently and efficiently.

Mr Anang said this when he addressed the first ordinary meeting of the third session of the sixth Assembly of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) in Tema on Tuesday.

He expressed concern about unauthorized structures that spring up at Tema and urged the authorities to ensure that prospective developers follow laid down procedures in order to bring sanity into the system.

Mr Anang told the assembly members to take the deliberations of the Assembly seriously in order to ensure that the citizenry respected the laws at the local level.

Mr Julius Debrah, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, appealed to assemblies in the region to step up their revenue mobilisation efforts so that they could initiate their own development programmes.

He said assemblies should regulate and control the rate at which assembly meetings are held to save revenue.

The Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Mr Richard Anamoo, said for the ports expansion projects to succeed a lot of traffic would have to be discharged at the Tema and Takoradi ports.

To this end, he said, GPHA would build a terminal to serve as a holding place and a bypass to the Tema Port to get more traffic off the Port.

Mr Robert Kempes Papa Nii Ofosuware, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, said the Assembly’s revenue target for this year stands at 34,402,916 Ghana cedis.

He said improving environmental sanitation and waste management continue to be a big challenge for the Assembly and blamed the unfortunate situation on the negative attitudes of some of the residents.

On roads, Mr Papa Nii Ofosuware said the Roads Unit would continue with routine maintenance works and construct walkways, drainage systems and upgrade and gravel some roads.
