4,500 mourners to attend Nana Binnah’s funeral
About 4,500 mourners, including 1500 invited guests, are expected to join the people of Shama and its environs to mourn the late Okokodurfo Kweku Binnah III, immediate past Paramount Chief of the Shama Traditional Area, who died last June.
The funeral rites, scheduled for April 15 to 20 this month, would attract both local and foreign mourners, Government officials, other high profile personalities and footballers of present and older generations.
The funeral dates were announced when Nana Kwamena Wienu II, Acting Paramount Chief of the Area, on Tuesday led a delegation of chiefs and queen-mothers from the Traditional Council to pay a courtesy call on Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, at the Flagstaff House in Accra.
The late traditional ruler died on June 1, 2012, at Shama at the age of 79.
He attended the Shama Methodist School, and worked with the Ghana Railways Corporation. He was a goalkeeper for the Sekondi Eleven Wise Football Team, and had Aggrey Fynn as one of his contemporaries.
The late Okokodurfo Binnah was also goalkeeper for the Railways Corporation Team, and played for a local football team called Asomakokobiko, and later became a football coach.
The delegation eulogized him for his humility and sense of patriotism.
He reigned for 26 years and it was during his rule that he gave out land for the establishment of the Aboadze Thermal Plant, that the Shama District Assembly was created; the Shama Senoir High School was established.
“For 26 years, Nana ruled and administered the traditional area with all humility, love fairness and sincerity, “Nana Anaman, spokesperson for the delegation said, adding that he was also a member of the judicial committee of the Western Regional House of Chiefs.
Vice President Amissah Arthur assured the delegation that he would inform President John Mahama of the funeral.
He said Government would do what it took to support the Council to give the late traditional leader a befitting burial.
