Minerals Commission called upon to check illegal mining in Upper East
The Minerals Commission has been asked to check activities of illegal miners in the Upper East Region, and encourage the operators to go into partnership with Shanxi Mining Company .
Mr Charles Taleog Ndanbon, the Deputy National Task Force Coordinator for Small Scale Mining Association of Ghana, who made the call, said any such move would help curb environmental degradation caused by the illegal miners in the region, particularly in the Talensi and Nabdam Districts.
Shaanxi Mining Company Limited, a subsidiary of China Gold Resources Group Company, is currently providing mining services to two small scale registered mining groups known as “Nyennyeye and Puboaataba” small scale mining groups in the area who had legally acquired their concessions
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Gbane, Mr. Ndanbon, who is also the Director of Puboaataba, regretted the spate of environmental degradation and pollution caused by activities of illegal miners in the region,
The Safety Engineer of Shaanxi Mining, Mr. Thomas Yenzanya, said the company operates according to mining procedures of Ghana.
The Human Resource Manager, Mr. Joseph Anokye, said the company places workers welfare at the centre of affairs.
He said: “We also operate in line with the Labour Act. Normal working conditions are followed strictly. Where overtime comes in overtime payment is done, The company has also registered its workers under the National Health Insurance Scheme. First aid is also provided instantly to workers when the need arise”.
