Labour Federation asks GMA, others to call off strike

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) and other essential services providers, currently on strike, have been asked to consider the plight of their clients, and resume work while the mechanism for dispute resolution is applied.

The call was made in a statement signed by Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Mr Abrahma Koomson, copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Wednesday.

It said: “GFL recognises the effect of the Labour Act 2003 (Act 651), which provides for the protection of workers’ rights and job security and sets down procedures for settlement of disputes arising between employers and employees”.

The statement said GFL considered as distasteful the industrial relations climate, which is a serious threat to the exercise of the rights of workers, guaranteed under the law”.

It said the Federation said the flagrant violation of the labour law if not addressed, could heighten the vulnerability of many workers.

The statement said that: “infractions of the law have occurred over the period, involving government, National Labour Commission and the Labour Unions, resulting in suspicions and mistrust among the parties.

“We urged parties involved in these disputes, especially the essential services operatives to consider the plight of the sick and to resume work”.
