Labour expert calls for strengthening of NBSSI
A labour expert on Wednesday called for the strengthening of the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI), to enable the Board to effectively respond to the needs of the informal sector operators.
Mr Stephen Osei-Yeboah, Head of the Local Economic Development Department of the Institute of Local Government Studies, made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra.
He called for resource-mobilisation efforts and capacity-building to enable the informal sector to meaningfully contribute to national development.
Mr. Osei-Yeboah said that government needed to provide the necessary infrastructure to enable operators in the sector to deliver on their role.
He said more than 110 business assistance centres existed at the NBSSI offices, country-wide that needed to assist the assemblies to be able to support the informal sector.
Mr Osei-Yeboah noted that an unofficial report available at the International Labour Organisation estimated that the informal sector contributed 25 per cent to Gross Domestic Product in Ghana.
He recommended that the informal sector, which employs a greater per cent of the workforce in Ghana, ought to be given the necessary attention to enable the sector to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.
