Driver jailed 16 months for careless and inconsiderate driving
A 25-year old driver, Emmanuel Nyaba was on Thursday sentenced to sixteen months imprisonment by a Cape Coast Circuit Court for careless and inconsiderate driving, negligently causing harm and driving without a license.
Nyaba, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced for twelve months imprisonment on count one and two which are to run concurrently and four months for count three to run consecutively.
Narrating the facts to the court presided over by Mrs. Florence Kai Otu, Police Chief Inspector Charles Anku said, on July 15, 2011 at about 1930 hours, Nyaba was then driving a Mitsubishi Space Wagon with registration number GT 4395 U from Twifo Nuamakrom Township towards Twifo Nuamakrom health Centre with three persons on board.
He said Nyaba on reaching a section of the road close to the Twifo Nuamakrom D/C Basic School junction, veered off the road and knocked down one Madam Grace Mensah as well as a 15-years old girl, Linda Amo, who were both walking along the shoulders of the road.
Chief Inspector Anku said, both victims sustained serious injuries, and were rushed to the Twifo Praso Government Hospital. However Linda Amo died upon reaching the hospital but Grace Mensah was treated and later discharged.
The prosecution said during investigations, the Vehicle examiner certified that the vehicle was in good condition prior to the accident, but it was later revealed that Nyaba did not have a professional driver’s license.
