Fire guts ceramic section of KNUST
The Department of Industrial Art of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was gutted by fire on Friday, causing massive destruction to Information Technology (IT) learning aids, equipment and other educational materials.
It started at about 0600 hours and left two offices and a learning theatre in complete ruins.
The timely response by firefighters prevented it from spreading. They battled for about 45 minutes to put out the blaze.
The Ashanti Regional Fire Officer, Philip Aheng-Mensah, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), that the cause was yet to be established, adding that, they were investigating.
The incident had temporarily halted academic activities at the department and the Vice Chancellor has called for calm among the students.
Professor William Otoo Ellis, who together with some members of the University’s management visited the scene to assess the extent of the damage and pledged cooperation with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to establish the cause.
