Ekumfi Assembly generates nearly GH¢13,000 revenue in 2012
The Ekumfi District Assembly has internally generated GH¢12,834.10 as revenue for 2012, representing 64 per cent of its target of GH¢20,000.00.
The district, which was carved out of the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly, however, faces challenges such as low level of economic activities and unwillingness of some residents to pay levies and property rate.
Mrs. Queenstar Maame Pokuawaa Sawyer, Deputy Central Regional Minister, who is also acting as Supervising District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, said these at the first ordinary meeting of the second session of the Assembly, on Thursday at Ekumfi.
She said to improve upon its revenue generation; the Assembly would rehabilitate the Essuehyia Lorry station and intensify education on payment of taxes, and seek ideas from Assembly Members on how to increase revenue.
Mrs. Sawyer said the Assembly would also tackle waste management in all the 55 communities in the district to improve hygiene and sanitation.
She said the Assembly would establish Senior High Schools at Otuam and Eyisam and asked the Assembly Members to ensure that land was made available for the project.
“The Assembly has prioritized three strategic Local Economic Development projects for implementation, which are pineapple production and processing, salt production and processing as well as mass coastal beach resort developments”, she said.
Mrs Sawyer said the Assembly had formed a team to inspect and monitor on-going projects to build a database on projects in the district.
She also said the Assembly has planned to provide street lights and solar lantern and to implement aquaculture project to promote fish farming.
Mr Abeiku Crentsil, Member of Parliament for Ekumfi , appealed to the Assembly Members to support him for the development of the area.
Mr Daniel Hammond, Presiding Member, appealed to government to appoint a substantive DCE for the area.
