18-year-old jailed ten years over narcotic drugs

prisonThe Takoradi Circuit Court on Wednesday sentenced 18 year old Raul Adams, an apprentice mason, to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour for possesing narcotic drugs without authourity.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Veronica Tibson told the court presided over by Mr. Justice Kwesi Boakye that at about 0430 hours on June 9, 2011, one Joseph Ewusie, a taxi driver, was sleeping in his taxi cab with registration number WR 575-10 parked by the roadside at Kojokrom, when he saw Adams opening the door of the taxi.

She said Ewusie raised an alarm when he realised that Adams was attempting to steal his drivers’ license, a mobile phone, a City driver’s license and cash of GHc25.00.

Chief Inspector Tibson said Adams was apprehended and a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp was found on him during a search.

She said Adams was immediately handed over to the Police at Kojokrom.

The prosecution said the accused claimed ownership of the dried leaves and that he stole it from a train at Tarkwa.

Chief Inspector Tibson said a test conducted by the Police forensic proved that the leaves which weighed 34 grammes was Indian hemp.
