Cell phones…to improve transparency

Officials managing the Ghana Open Data Initiative (GODI) are set to launch a mobile application version of the project. This is to make government and other relevant state institutions more transparent.

GODI is an initiative by the Ministry of Communications which is being spearheaded by the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), the IT implementing agency of government.

At a recent forum held at the US Embassy in Accra, Project Manager of GODI, Mr Eric Akumiah told ghanabusinessnews.com that it will soon launch a mobile application for the initiative.

“By June 2013, we will launch the mobile application for GODI,” Mr Akumiah said in an interview.

According to him, the mobile application drive is to help citizens to share relevant information and also to enhance government’s transparency.

The GODI objective includes promoting transparency in government transactions and creating business opportunity for reuse of open government data.

The initiative involves rethinking governance and how administrations should adapt their procedures to meet the demands and necessities of their citizens.

The mobile application of GODI is expected to leverage on the souring over 26 million mobile SIM subscribers in the country.
